I prefer my breechcloths about 1.75 yards/1.6 meters long (like this one), though others may prefer longer or shorter, depending on their body size and how long they want their flaps. Widths vary as well; the 'cloth above is about 13 inches/33 cm wide, but a width of 10-16 inches/25-40 cm will generally work.
 

Length of material

One rule-of-thumb I've seen is to make the length about the same as the wearer's height (which is about right for me). The same source suggests the width of the wearer's hands with the fingers spread apart and the thumbtips touching.
